It’s an update that’s got a lot to recommend it, but that’s simultaneously tough to recommend, if only because it’s difficult to point to a single big feature that will make a huge difference in the life of the average user. What’s left is a hodgepodge of interesting ideas and occasionally misguided attempts to prescribe how people should use their mobile devices. So it is with iOS 15, a release that appears with at least one of its most touted features, SharePlay, delayed until later this year, and another impressive piece of functionality-Universal Control-demoed but never even present in the betas. And splashy new features are often forays into unexplored territory rather than making up ground. It might seem like it’s the new kid on the block, but the truth is that iOS has reached the point where any limitations are predominantly choices that Apple has made. The point is: these are mature operating systems, not upstarts still trying to find their way.

Fifteen years after Mac OS X was released, it was already on its third name iteration, having evolved to OS X, and then back to macOS. Although the Mac update is arriving first, expect upgrades for the Skype Windows and Linux clients to follow. Skype’s release of 2.8 for Mac coincides with the MacWorld conference, which kicks off this morning in San Francisco. You can also follow your contacts’ mood updates, though you’ll need to head to Preferences > Advanced to enable the new features.īy themselves mood messages might seem a bit “me too!” but Dan York claims there is a way to pass your mood updates on to Twitter, which would make the feature mildly more useful.
Mood messages act just like Facebook status updates or Twitter posts - short messages broadcasting what you’re doing. There’s also a new “mood” message feature that adds another small social network feature to Skype. Skype’s screen sharing should make tasks like product demos, collaboration or even video sharing significantly easier. The screen sharing features aren’t as robust as what you’ll find in iChat (there’s no way to control the other user’s screen, or interact with their desktop), but the cross-platform aspect is something iChat lacks. Because the screen sharing feature works over the Skype video channel, it’s possible to share screens across Skype platforms - Windows, Linux and Mac OS X - something that is often difficult to set up via IM clients. Perhaps the most notable of the new feature in Skype for Mac 2.8 is the screen sharing feature which allows you to share either your entire screen, or just a select portion, with other Skype users. The latest version will add some new Mac-only features like screen sharing, per-minute calls via wifi service Boingo and the ability to follow updates to your friends’ Skype “mood.”
